Reliance Precision Mechatronics - News http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/ Wed, 19 Feb 2014 09:03:00 +0000 Reli-a-Flex® Coupling Patented Slot Design Delivers Smooth Motion Transfer
Designed and manufactured by Reliance Precision, the Reli-a-Flex® range of couplings is a popular choice for design engineers seeking to maximise torsional stiffness between two shafts without incurring high bearing loads.

Reliance's patented slot design delivers very smooth transition of rotary motion by allowing pivot points to move freely back and forth while maintaining the centre piece angle. Minimal bi-directional error and fewer stress variations occur, resulting in increased bearing life and reduced maintenance costs. The one piece configuration produces zero backlash and greater predictability. This consistency has been verified by testing couplings for over 50,000,000 cycles at rated torque and at 80% maximum offset without failure.

Manufactured from aircraft grade aluminium alloy and with outside diameters available in sizes ranging from 6mm to 40mm, Reli-a-Flex® couplings can be selected through the Reliance catalogue or by visiting the online store where a custom coupling can be created to match specific design applications.

For more information on the Reli-a-Flex® coupling or our full range of positioning components and assemblies, please contact Reliance at sales@reliance.co.uk

/en/news/143/reli-a-flex%C2%AE+coupling+patented+slot+design+delivers++smooth+motion+transfer 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/143/reli-a-flex%C2%AE+coupling+patented+slot+design+delivers++smooth+motion+transfer Fri, 07 Feb 2014 09:47:00 +0000 Versatile Cost Effective Double Loop Couplings from Reliance

A family of double loop shaft couplings which provide stability with flexibility is now available from Reliance Precision. The spacecraft, which had been in deep space hibernation for 31 months, will now continue its primary mission to chase and rendezvous with 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko; a 2.5 mile wide comet captured by the gravity of Jupiter. Following a tense 45 minutes wait, Rosetta beamed the words “Hello world” to scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) confirming the probe’s instruments had successfully restarted and indicating that a major stage of the overall mission had been a resounding success.

The mission is of particular interest for engineers at Reliance Precision who manufactured gears for Norwegian company KONGSBERG for use on Rosetta. The gears play a vital role in rotating the two 15 metre solar panels, enabling them to perpetually face the sun: a crucial function given that Rosetta has no internal batteries and relies entirely on solar energy for electricity. The team at Reliance is thrilled to be contributing to such a prestigious project: there is something both satisfying and humbling about knowing our components are not only performing perfectly, but in deep space at a distance of around 500 million miles from our works here in Huddersfield.

Having been travelling for 10 years Rosetta will engage with the comet in August and commence mapping and characterisation of the comet's surface. This is partly in preparation for the November launch of 'Philae'; a separate landing probe designed to analyse water and other chemicals present on the icy rock. The mission is groundbreaking in that a spacecraft has never come into such close proximity with a comet, let alone deploy a landing vessel. In conjunction with Philae, Rosetta will continue to orbit and gather data and information for up to one year. Comets are thought to be debris that predates our solar system and scientists believe studying them could help expand our knowledge of the universe.

/en/news/141/reliance+precision+contributes+to+rosetta%27s+success 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/141/reliance+precision+contributes+to+rosetta%27s+success Wed, 08 Jan 2014 09:02:00 +0000 Business Brokers Scheme Aims to Boost Apprenticeships
A Kirklees apprentice is encouraging other young women to consider a career in engineering - as figures show that just 3% of those starting engineering apprenticeships in the UK over the past two years have been female.

Megan Lunn, of Meltham, is in the third year of an apprenticeship with global engineering firm Reliance Precision Limited.

She is working towards an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in mechanical engineering - spending one day in the classroom at Kirklees College and the rest of the week at the company's Lepton headquarters.

Since September, 2011 - when Megan started with Reliance - some 23,510 men have started engineering apprenticeships compared to just 760 women.

Kirklees is now aiming to increase the opportunities available for young people and businesses through apprenticeships and is one of eight apprenticeship hubs in the Leeds City Region.

A Business Brokers scheme has been set up to provide firms across all sectors with the advice needed to identify where roles can be created and what financial support is available.

A key sector being supported is engineering - building on the district's industrial heritage - and Megan says her teacher at Honley High School gave her the idea of an apprenticeship.

"I was really interested in science and technology at school, but wanted to use that practically rather than continuing to just study for years," she said.

"My teacher recommended an apprenticeship with Reliance Precision would be the best route for me and he was right. I get to learn skills in a real engineering company with experiences you could never get in the classroom."

A government report, Tomorrow's Engineers, found the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe. Megan says this spurred her on, adding: "For me, often being the only female has not been a problem and no-one has ever treated me any differently.

"I would encourage any girl interested in science and engineering to go for it and would love to see more and more female engineers coming into the industry in the future."

Grants of up to £1,500 are available to fund new apprenticeships in businesses of up to 1,000 employees which have not taken on an apprentice in the past year and Kirklees Business Brokers are able to help companies explore the best option for them and unlock that funding.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan said: "Kirklees has a strong heritage of engineering and Megan's story shows the importance of apprenticeships to ensuring our area continues to be a world leader in the industry.

"Kirklees Council, in partnership with Leeds City Region, is committed to helping businesses grow and develop their workforce by introducing apprenticeships. Our Business Brokers scheme is helping more companies to find the grants, incentives and other free support available so they can support their firm's growth, and offer opportunities to young people, through apprenticeships."

He said: "With so few females in this country choosing engineering as a career option, it is encouraging to see that companies like Reliance Precision are helping buck that trend here in Kirklees.

"I would encourage other companies to contact the Business Brokers to find out how apprentices can support their work."

Contact the Business Brokers team on 01484 437075 or e-mail apphub@kirklees.gov.uk

Article supplied courtesy of Kirklees Council.

/en/news/140/business+brokers+scheme+aims+to+boost+apprenticeships 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/140/business+brokers+scheme+aims+to+boost+apprenticeships Thu, 05 Dec 2013 14:57:00 +0000 Reliance Retains SC21 Silver Award
Reliance Precision has retained its SC21 Silver Award for business excellence, having achieved the necessary delivery and quality performance levels for the second year running. Coming from a successful background in the consulting engineering and chemical industry, Andrew now brings that same passion for science and technology to a specialist mechanical engineering environment.

Reliance Precision provides robust and high integrity components and assemblies to the aerospace and defence sector. Andrew joins the company as the defence industry faces challenging times and Reliance, having supplied the industry for over fifty years, is in the process of renewing its business strategy. Reliance is best known as a gear supplier and widely recognised for its catalogue of products; providing precision, high accuracy components and assemblies for rotary and linear motion. They are also able to collaborate on new product introduction programmes, providing specialist design and manufacturing experience and problem solving expertise; a service which some industry players are unaware of, but one which has been welcomed by many of its existing customers. One of these describes the company as fulfilling a valuable role of 'niche industrialisation'. As a newcomer to the defence industry, Andrew sees the importance of raising awareness of the technical support Reliance has to offer:

"Particularly relevant for all of us in this industry is the need to continue to innovate, increasing the cost effectiveness and reliability of equipment. We perform well when we are addressing difficult engineering scenarios in design and assembly and Reliance can bring substantial added value to projects, especially when a programme is in the early stages of development."

As the global recession in public finances continues to bite in sectors such as aerospace and defence, Andrew believes it has never been more essential to encourage durable business relationships. By focussing on long term projects and providing outstanding customer support, Reliance has maintained a healthy flow of business and continues to find new work despite the current economic downturn. Defence is viewed as a key part of the company's long term future and Reliance understands that it must forge ever closer partnerships with its customers to maintain its success. Andrew would encourage anyone working at the early stages of a design programme involving precise, accurate motion to consider Reliance as their design and manufacturing partner.

Speaking on a more personal level, Andrew finds his new role at Reliance both stimulating and enjoyable. He comments on his new life in West Yorkshire:

"I sometimes imagine what I would have thought of myself as a 14 year old looking forward to what I'm doing now; discussing matters of space technology and being involved with designing a bionic hand: working alongside highly motivated and technical people who achieve extraordinary new things. It is a highly rewarding job and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."

Further information about Reliance's design support services is available at www.reliance.co.uk/en/design
/en/news/136/new+reliance+precision+md+predicts+a+bright+future+for+design+engineering+in+the+defence+industry 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/136/new+reliance+precision+md+predicts+a+bright+future+for+design+engineering+in+the+defence+industry Tue, 24 Sep 2013 13:38:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits At The Engineering Design Show
Reliance will be exhibiting at the Engineering Design Show in Coventry from 2nd to 3rd October 2013. Held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, this new show, only in its second year, is dedicated exclusively to the design engineer.

Reliance will be featuring its catalogue of precision motion control components and electro-mechanical assemblies, together with specialist capabilities for the design, manufacture, assembly and test of custom solutions.

The catalogue has been developed to provide the design engineer with a complete source for precise motion control. Products are offered in standard specifications (available from stock or on short delivery) or customised to suit individual applications. Backed by comprehensive technical support, the catalogue range allows engineers to order in small quantities at stock prices, facilitating the effective development of prototypes.

For completely custom solutions, Reliance also offers a design engineering support service, assisting with design from specification projects, design validation and test. With in-depth engineering and manufacturing capabilities, Reliance is able to support the design engineer right through the new product introduction cycle, working with experienced production engineers, metrologists and development test engineers to industrialise the design and take it forward into production.

Reliance looks forward to welcoming visitors in Hall 1, Stand F95.
/en/news/135/reliance+exhibits+at+the+engineering+design+show 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/135/reliance+exhibits+at+the+engineering+design+show Thu, 05 Sep 2013 17:38:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits at DSEI 2013
Reliance Precision will be exhibiting its breadth of specialist design and manufacturing capabilities at DSEI from 10th to 13th September 2013. Held at the ExCeL centre in London, DSEI is the world's leading defence and security exhibition.

The company has supplied the military aerospace and defence industry for over 50 years, but this is the first time of exhibiting at DSEI where it will feature high performance mechanisms including gears, geared systems, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical sub-systems.

Reliance is an established supplier to global prime contractors and OEMs and is proud to hold the SC21 silver award for business excellence.

Reliance looks forward to welcoming visitors to stand S5-340, booth 6, in the NDI pavilion.

/en/news/134/reliance+exhibits+at+dsei+2013 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/134/reliance+exhibits+at+dsei+2013 Thu, 05 Sep 2013 17:38:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits at Offshore Europe 2013
Reliance enjoyed a successful visit to Europe's largest oil and gas exhibition, Offshore Europe, in the first week of September, developing new business in this important industrial sector. Having recently celebrated 25 years since launch, they estimate that over 10,000 young people have sailed on the vessel; benefitting from the life changing effects of their residential voyages.

Such a busy sailing calendar means that the James Cook undergoes regular periods of scheduled maintenance. This is where Tom Broom, Bradley Jessop and David Black; apprentices from Reliance Precision in Huddersfield, provided a helping hand. The apprentices took a 3 day break from their regular duties at Reliance to join staff and other volunteers aboard the vessel. Docked at the mouth of the River Tyne, they helped perform essential maintenance tasks such as the de-rusting of metal parts on the deck and re-painting.

As well as picking up some valuable practical skills, the apprentices had to use their own initiative. For Tom, it was the first time he had travelled a considerable distance alone and had to organise his own travel arrangements. The scheme highlighted the need for working cooperatively as a team in an environment where everyone took responsibility for their assigned tasks. All 3 apprentices are convinced that the expedition has helped them with their own personal development and believe Reliance will also gain in the long term; Tom Broom, second year apprentice explained:

"I think that I will be able to use the maintenance skills in my work at Reliance and have new found confidence to ask advice of those working within my team. I would definitely recommend this trip for next year's trainees as they will experience a different type of working environment, as well as appreciating the importance of time keeping and working to a deadline."

Back in Huddersfield, Mick Hallam, Training Manager at Reliance, is keen for apprentices to fully embrace the concept of teamwork at an early stage of their career. He emphasised that the technical nature of the company means well organised collaboration is critical to the efficient and timely production of specialised equipment for the markets Reliance operates in, where accuracy and quality are paramount.

With a 60 year record of successfully training apprentices, Reliance believes that investing in personal skills is just as important as nurturing a highly technically skilled workforce; it helps advance expertise and secures long term continuity of business.
/en/news/130/apprentices+discover+the+value+of+teamwork 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/130/apprentices+discover+the+value+of+teamwork Wed, 03 Apr 2013 16:48:00 +0000 Leadscrew Assemblies Designed for Miniature Mechatronics Systems
Alongside linear slides, couplings and precision gears, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions, announce a new range of leadscrew sizes. The "Micro" Series leadscrew assemblies are 2mm diameter screws with available standard leads ranging from 0.3mm to 2mm per revolution. They are available in a variety of nut configurations; manufactured using self-lubricating acetal.

This remarkable product line is an enabling technology, opening up a broader range of designs. The Micro Series allows for the miniaturisation of products, reduced power consumption, and weight reduction without compromising performance or reliability. These assemblies have been developed in response to growing demands in many markets that utilise miniaturised mechatronics systems and high-end motion control applications.

Kerk Micro Series leadscrew assemblies are manufactured from premium grade 303 stainless steel and provide exceptional performance, long life, and require no maintenance. High-accuracy threads with superior uniformity deliver precise motion and reduce noise and vibration. Standardised nut and screw assemblies facilitate ease of design and flexibility without the need for customisation.

For more information on the full range of positioning components and assemblies, please contact Reliance at sales@rpmechatronics.co.uk
/en/news/129/leadscrew+assemblies+designed+for+miniature+mechatronics+systems 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/129/leadscrew+assemblies+designed+for+miniature+mechatronics+systems Wed, 06 Mar 2013 12:21:00 +0000 Reliance’s ‘Cool Muscle’ Delivers Accurate Tidal Simulation
In January 2013, a paper was published by two petroleum engineers from Curtin University (Australia) and Imperial College London (UK) which investigated how the action of tides can affect oil and water saturations in the capillary transition zone.

The capillary transition zone is an area where oil saturations in underground oil reservoirs change with height due to the combination of capillary and buoyancy forces. This can significantly influence the oil distribution in the reservoir and it is important to understand this in detail to design efficient oil recovery schemes. The paper investigated the influence of semi-diurnal lunar tides on this transition zone.

Stefan Iglauer and Ann Muggeridge constructed a model that would accurately mimic these sinusoidal changes in height and pressure. Three cylindrical columns, one metre high with a 100mm internal diameter were filled with sand and a varying change in air/water contact was applied for 90 days. A reservoir was connected to the columns which moved up and down in a way that simulated the M2 semidiurnal lunar tide. This was made possible by mounting the reservoir on a platform attached to a linear slide which was in turn connected to Reliance's Cool Muscle Motor.

It was the accuracy required to model an effective experiment which led the team to consider applying the Cool Muscle. Spotted in engineering publications and on the internet, the motor was viewed as an ideal choice for the experiment due to its ability to perform complex co-ordinated movement and use mathematical notation to induce motion. A 50,000 count magnetic encoder, 32 bit RISC processor and vector drive amplifiers, provided the ultra-smooth operation and accuracy required to effectively mimic a lunar tide. It was noted that, in application, the accuracy of the stepper motor system was within the range of +/- 0.1%.

Reliance assisted the scientists by supplying the motor as a ready programmed unit. Using CoolWorks Lite 4.1.4, the motor/stepper was configured to reproduce the characteristics of a tidal sequence by programming 50,000 steps in each given period of 12 hours and 20 minutes; this mirrored the period from high to low tide. A pressure change of 4,000 Pa was achieved to simulate comparable pressure changes expected with tides. The experiment concluded that pressure changes do in fact influence the vertical saturation profile in addition to the expected saturation gradient predicted by assuming capillary - buoyancy force equilibrium.

Reliance's willingness to supply an integrated, pre-programmed mechanism meant that the experiment could progress without the need to validate the test system. Judith and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, requested the event to be used as an opportunity to highlight the various health issues that surround the subject of men's health.

After contacting Prostate Cancer UK1, the leading charity for men with Prostate cancer, it was decided that employees would raise awareness by wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the charity's logo and by focusing on male specific health issues. A number of female staff work at Reliance, but the nature of Kevin's illness meant the day would be focussed mainly on the men. As well as Prostate cancer, a range of men's health concerns were explored; including heart disease, blood pressure and other applicable types of cancer.

Reliance Director, Roger Kenworthy, spoke to the whole company and the occupational nurse visited various departments, offering advice and information. People were also invited to donate to the charity if they wished. Essentially, men were informed on how to identify potential problems and not delay in seeking medical advice if they have worrying symptoms.

The day was a great success and employees wore their yellow t-shirts with pride. Roger, Judith and her daughters were thanked for organising the event and for helping Prostate Cancer UK in their vital work.

1 Reg. charity in England and Wales (1005541) Reg. The coupling selector enables the designers to create their own unique Reli-a-Flex® coupling with exact specifications for the application in hand, rather than using a coupling with a similar specification which could potentially compromise the design.

The original range includes outside diameters from 13mm to 40mm and the additional micro sizes now available are 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. These couplings retain all the advantages of Reli-a-Flex's patented design, and are ideal for the accurate, miniature motion control applications demanded by the printing, medical and scientific instrument markets.

Other one piece couplings currently on the market may outwardly resemble the Reli-a-Flex® at first glance, but there is one vital difference. The patented slot design on the Reli-a-Flex® maintains a constant pivot length which minimises stress variations. On the Reli-a-Flex® the pivot points travel back and forward without changing the centre piece angle, resulting in uniform stress levels and accurate angular rotation. Similar looking couplings on the market can actually have a slot pattern where the pivot points move in and out, and the centre piece angle varies. This causes stress variations and less uniform rotation.

In tests performed on typical applications, the bi-directional error produced by a Reli-a-Flex® coupling used to drive a 3600 line encoder was four times smaller than that produced by a 4 beam spiral coupling. When used to drive a 6.35mm lead leadscrew, the bi-directional error from the Reli-a-Flex® was 6 times less than that of the 4 beam spiral.

Reli-a-Flex® also offers predictable performance, having been tested for 50,000,000 cycles at its rated torque and 80% maximum offset.
/en/news/119/reliance+expands+its+range+of+reli-a-flex+precision+couplings 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/119/reliance+expands+its+range+of+reli-a-flex+precision+couplings Thu, 13 Sep 2012 10:57:00 +0000 Reliance Receives Supplier Excellence Award
SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, has named Reliance Precision Ltd. the "Laser UK Supplier of the Year 2011". This new configuration includes a special adapter plate that allows the smaller 36mm OD unit to replace 42mm and 46mm units in existing applications.

Performance of the 36mm G4 linear actuator not only exceeds the performance of comparable size actuators, it approaches the performance of larger 42mm and 46mm linear actuators from various manufacturers. The 36mm unit with the integrated adapter plate allows users to replace existing 42 and 46mm units easily by using the same bolt pattern and pilot surface.

Among the advantages of substituting the 36mm G4 linear actuator are a smaller linear actuator body, which is especially important when space is a premium, and a lower cost system compared with the larger-size units, without sacrificing performance or lifespan. Force output range for the G4 linear actuator is from 70N to 260N.

The G4 linear actuator architecture employs the latest technologies to extend reliability and meet high-performance requirements. The design utilises optimised tooth geometry along with high-energy neodymium magnets, resulting in a higher continuous force output in a small package. With 20% higher output force across the entire speed range compared with other designs of similar size, the G4 incorporates the latest custom-engineered plastics and larger bearings for greater rotor support and higher axial load capability.

The 36mm linear actuator is ideal for a wide range of applications including medical equipment, bar code scanning devices, printing equipment, laboratory instrumentation and other mechanisms that require high force in a small package. As with our other stepper motor linear actuators range, three configurations are available: Captive, Non-Captive, and External Linear.
/en/news/114/introducing+a+36mm+linear+actuator+configuration+that+replaces+existing+42mm+packages 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/114/introducing+a+36mm+linear+actuator+configuration+that+replaces+existing+42mm+packages Fri, 03 Aug 2012 09:23:00 +0000 Stringent Quality and Process Control Prevents Contamination
A laser based targeting system in a military aircraft and a mass spectrometer, used for environmental and food safety monitoring, are both applications where contamination in the production process could potentially cause operational failure. Systems and instruments such as these contain complex clean assemblies, often with expensive components which have specific handling and process requirements. Gears with specialist coatings, for example, demand high standards of cleanliness and surface preparation in order to ensure adhesion. Ion transport systems operating in a high vacuum, such as those found in the mass spectrometer, have their own unique set of cleanliness requirements to ensure effective vacuum performance and electrical charging.

High levels of cleanliness and robust process control are often essential requirements of the scientific instrument, semi-conductor, defence and photonics industries, where the effects of contaminants can lead to equipment malfunction and performance degradation. Whilst considerable variety exists in providing "clean" solutions, common practices and techniques link the diverse range of end products.

The defence industry refers to Foreign Object Debris, the semi-conductor industry refers to Foreign Body Analysis; slightly different terminology, but a shared strategic issue. Cleanliness means different things to different people in different industries; there is no universal definition. The management of cleanliness, however, does typically require the same disciplines across all industries, even if not the same "recipes". Repeating threads include component cleaning processes, handling methods, environmental conditioning (e.g. cleanroom certification), together with related parameters such as temperature and humidity control. These drive operational procedures and disciplines, such as clothing requirements, particle counting, process monitoring and control (e.g. cleaning tanks), equipment calibration, and training and mentoring. One set of operational procedures and disciplines, however, cannot simply be applied from one customer to the next. Close customer liaison from the start of any project is critical to ensuring the most appropriate production tools, methods, quality and process controls are put in place.

Choices start at the design stage with the selection of appropriate materials, surface finishes, coatings and lubrication, the management of interacting surfaces and particulate generation, thermal management and, in the case of high vacuum assemblies, venting strategies. The manufacturing and assembly processes begin with options for different cleaning techniques. Solvent cleaning can be used to remove traces of oil-based contaminants, and additional levels of cleanliness achieved using aqueous or acid cleaning. Plasma cleaning is used to remove microscopic organic contaminants, and elevated temperature vacuum baking to outgas material surfaces.

The certification of the cleanroom in which the assembly activity is carried out is also a key factor driven by the application. Reliance has a number of facilities to suit different applications. Sub-systems for scientific instruments for example are produced in a laminar flow cleanroom, certified to ISO 14644-1 Class 6 (Fed Std 209E Class 1,000). Assemblies containing optical devices, such as those used in laser products for the aerospace industry, are produced in a dedicated opto-mechanical cleanroom, using higher specification clean air flow benches certified to ISO 14644-1 Class 4 (Fed Std 209E Class 10) together with specialist non-contact handling and inspection equipment. In certain cases project-specific facilities have to be built to meet individual contract requirements. Special adhesives and coatings used in some industries can require fume extraction hoods or the development of a completely separate project facility.

It is important to demonstrate as far as possible that components and assemblies which are to be used in a clean or high-vacuum environment have been built to specification. Diligent quality, process control and training are essential. Indeed in the space industry, where prolonged unmanned satellite operation is required, the supplier needs to be prepared to allow all aspects of manufacture to be audited and all stages documented and signed.

Test activity is an essential mechanism for demonstrating that the assemblies work in line with the customer's specification. Functional testing might include leak testing, background contamination analysis, laser-based testing, and electrical conditioning. A combination of standard test equipment, custom test equipment, and test versions of the customer's instrument may be considered; where possible tests need to replicate operation as if it were in the parent machine. Having the appropriate depth of technical experience to be able to undertake design analysis and verification can help validate the performance of the assembly and resolve performance issues.

Since the impact of contaminants and the measures needed to protect against them are so tightly defined by the design of each product, the application it serves and the environment it works in, cleanliness is typically specified on a case-by-case basis. Scientific instrument companies, satellite manufacturers, the semi-conductor and defence industries, facing demanding requirements in yield, performance, accuracy and reliability, know from their own experience the criteria for assessing cleanliness, and importantly what operational processes are acceptable and unacceptable. The challenge for their supply chain is to provide a flexible, customised clean assembly service, with the necessary breadth of facilities, appropriate depth of engineering expertise, and effective quality and process control.

Reliance Precision Ltd. is a specialist supplier of tested sub-assemblies to major equipment manufacturers in the scientific instrument, semi-conductor, defence and photonics industries. For designers working on prototyping projects Reliance now holds stock lengths of guides which can be quickly cut to length to suit individual requirements, offering a cost-effective, short lead-time solution for low volumes.

Innovation in miniaturisation of products has led to a need for linear motion solutions that offer high speed without compromising rigidity, torsional resistance or life. The Reliance miniature guides operate by two rows of circulating ball bearings mating with a 45 degree Gothic style profile. This gives multi-direction equalisation of force, which enables high velocity motion with low friction. Miniature operating environments dictate minimal clearance settings, and an optional pre-loading of the bearings can be requested in conditions that demand additional stiffness and precision. Further options include variations in carriage sealing systems, lubrication and reinforcement.

Reliance's aim is to supply standard components that can be integrated seamlessly into existing mechanisms and its range of miniature linear guides follow that philosophy, providing a 'drop in replacement ' product so customers can continue production with minimal down time.

The miniature linear guides offer excellent price and performance; all guides are inspected and tested for quality assurance. The new cut-to-length capability means that customers can order small quantities and samples for product trials and prototyping.
/en/news/111/customised+linear+guides+-+a+cost-effective%2C+versatile+prototyping+solution 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/111/customised+linear+guides+-+a+cost-effective%2C+versatile+prototyping+solution Mon, 30 Jul 2012 15:06:00 +0000 Reliance To Exhibit at Farnborough International Air Show
Reliance Precision will be exhibiting its breadth of specialist design and manufacturing capabilities at Farnborough International Air Show from 9th to 13th July.

High performance aerospace and defence mechanisms will be featured including gears, geared systems, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical sub-systems.

Reliance is an established supplier to global prime contractors and OEMs in the aerospace and defence industries. The environment and challenges you're thrown into are extraordinary, and you learn so much - about yourself as much as the leadership and teamwork skills. The soldiers around us were simply superb - they looked after us brilliantly, and gave us all an experience we'll remember for the rest of our lives."

The Merlin Executive exercise saw over 70 staff from organisations across the region taking part, all of which were mixed up and split into seven teams before carrying out a range of tasks and missions.

A spokesman for the Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association in Yorkshire said: "The exercise was a great success and enjoyed by all, but there's also a serious side to the whole event about the benefits a reservist can bring to employers. The training they receive is the same as the regular forces and besides this preparing them for mobilisation to places like Afghanistan, it also provides them valuable skills in business - motivation, self-discipline, confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership to name just a few. We want to encourage employers and employees to consider what the Reserve Forces have to offer, and this is one very exciting way of doing that."

Go to www.rfca-yorkshire.org.uk

Article supplied courtesy of The Huddersfield Daily Examiner and image courtesy of Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association for Yorkshire and the Humber.

/en/news/109/it%27s+all+done+with+military+precision 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/109/it%27s+all+done+with+military+precision Tue, 19 Jun 2012 16:21:00 +0000 Reliance's 'Cool Muscle' Plays a Major Role in the Fight Against Prostate Cancer
With one in eight men affected before the age of seventy five, and 37,000 cases diagnosed in the UK each year, prostate cancer is by far the most common form of cancer affecting men today.

In what has been described as a 'paradigm shift' in the treatment of prostate cancer, the French company EDAP TMS, in collaboration with Inserm (French Institute of Medical Research), has developed the Ablatherm® High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which enables a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer. Unlike conventional methods, this procedure is free from any major side effects and studies have shown that 95% of men make a full recovery within a twelve month period.

Contributing to Ablatherm's® efficient system performance is the Reliance Cool Muscle intelligent actuator: an integrated drive and control instrument supplied by Reliance Precision Mechatronics.

The Reliance Cool Muscle actuator enables the Ablatherm® probe to create a 3D image of the prostate. Urologists then use a PC to identify the area damaged by lesions, and ultrasound waves destroy the affected area. Unlike radiation treatment, this procedure focuses specifically on the area concerned leaving surrounding tissue healthy and undamaged.

The probe is guided by Reliance's Cool Muscle technology and effects micron-point accuracy. Closed-loop control and a 50,000 count encoder facilitate precise execution of movement, torque and velocity. Reliability in positional accuracy and force are essential requirements for the Ablatherm® probe, and the constant feedback data provided by the Cool Muscle helps ensure the probe is positioned carefully and effectively during patient treatment.

The level of integration of the Reliance Cool Muscle actuator, incorporating motor, encoder, driver, controller and slide assembly, has also helped simplify the design and manufacture of the Ablatherm® instrument, enabling EDAP to focus resources on the development of their innovative ultrasound medical solution.

EDAP's Mechanical Design Manager stressed the importance not just of the functionality of the product, but of the design support provided by Reliance, remarking that: "they always help us with our selection of mechatronic components and their early involvement in the design stage is greatly appreciated". Reliance strive to provide in-depth technical support in the context of its customers' applications and engineering constraints, working responsively to adapt its products to suit individual requirements. This has led to a strong technical relationship between the companies with Reliance working closely with EDAP on the next generation of the groundbreaking Ablatherm® instrument.
/en/news/108/reliance%27s+%27cool+muscle%27+plays+a+major+role+in+the+fight+against+prostate+cancer 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/108/reliance%27s+%27cool+muscle%27+plays+a+major+role+in+the+fight+against+prostate+cancer Mon, 02 Apr 2012 14:33:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits at Drives and Controls
Reliance Precision Mechatronics will be exhibiting its latest drives and motor capabilities at the Drives and Control exhibition, to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, from 17th to 19th April.

A diverse range of products will be featured including precision gears and geared mechanisms, motors, gearboxes, couplings and a wide range of standard positioning components. An example of the customisation capabilities to meet a unique engineering requirement is a precision linear rail system developed for an application requiring very high stiffness, accuracy and repeatability.

Along the axial length of the system is a precision recirculating ball rail, which has a high-load capacity and high rigidity. The extruded aluminium frame supports all the components for the system. This particular design, the drive mechanism is a HaydonTM stepper motor and a precision rolled 303 stainless steel Kerk® leadscrew. Attached to both the leadscrew and the precision ball rail is a machined aluminium load carriage with an integral Delrin drive nut.

The rail system can be easily tailored to suit many alternative applications. The design of the rail mechanics allows a maximum load of 1570N in the 'Z' direction while maintaining accuracy specification. Maximum roll, pitch, and yaw specifications are 22.65 Nm, 13.9 Nm, and 13.9 Nm respectively. The practical load capability will depend on the motor / leadscrew combination. The system has been designed around a 9.5mm diameter lead screw using standard leads of 0.64mm to 38.10mm.

When combined with a 1.8 degree hybrid stepper motor, very fine positioning resolutions can be configured. A brush or brushless DC motor also can be used for applications requiring higher speed and higher linear force output. Positioning resolution in the case of a closed loop DC brushed or brushless motor is determined by the capabilities of the encoder system. An encoder system can be added to either the motor or the leadscrew.

For applications requiring even greater accuracy than can be accomplished with a rotary encoder, the rail system has features added to allow the integration of a linear encoder with micron resolution allowing feedback of the true load position.

For more information on the full range of positioning components and assemblies, please contact Reliance at sales@rpmechatronics.co.uk or visit our website www.rpmechatronics.co.uk
/en/news/106/customised+linear+motion+solutions 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/106/customised+linear+motion+solutions Fri, 16 Mar 2012 10:06:00 +0000 Changing Lives and Inspiring Futures
The Ocean Youth Trust North (OYT North) state proudly in their motto that they: "change lives and inspire futures"; a claim that Eddy Townend and Tom Jones, second year apprentices at Reliance Precision, would certainly agree with having spent three days working with the trust on The James Cook, an impressive 21 metre ocean going vessel, anchored at the mouth of The River Tyne.

The OYT North facilitate a personal development experience which detaches young people from the security of their everyday lives, where mundane chores, once taken for granted, suddenly become their own responsibility: "On the way there, I had to find my way around unfamiliar places and changeable train timetables for the first time," explains Eddy. "When I eventually arrived, I was introduced to everyone and we were given our individual tasks to do. It was all a bit daunting at first, but the staff encouraged us and made us feel part of their team."

The work Eddy undertook on board the James Cook helped develop his awareness of different aspects of engineering. Back at Reliance he is part of a team producing high accuracy components, often working to tolerances of just a few microns. This trip gave the apprentices the opportunity to try their hand at something a little different.

Mick Hallam, Reliance's Training Officer, is convinced that exposure to more maintenance based tasks builds the apprentices' appreciation of how engineering components work within mechanisms: "One of the projects involved the dismantling, cleaning and reassembling of a water pump. This sort of activity nurtures an understanding of how parts work together and that the correct use of lubricants can be just as important as producing components with dimensional accuracy."

With its commitment to quality and engineering excellence, Reliance's in-house training school has produced a steady flow of high calibre, award-winning apprentices. Both Eddy and Tom agree that trips such as this provide a refreshing and diverse element to their training that adds balance, promotes teamwork and builds character. Additionally, Mick Hallam comments on how apprentices often demonstrate a new maturity on their return: "in the quality of the work they produce, but also in how they interact with their colleagues".
/en/news/105/changing+lives+and+inspiring+futures 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/105/changing+lives+and+inspiring+futures Thu, 16 Feb 2012 11:20:00 +0000 Selex Galileo Hosts Supplier Awards Ceremony
Reliance Precision received the SC21 silver award for business excellence at a ceremony in Edinburgh hosted by Selex Galileo Ltd. and organised by ADS, the trade organisation for the UK's aerospace, defence, space and security industries. The proximity sensor utilises miniature hall effect technology in an IC package mounted directly on the actuator. The hall effect is an ideal technology with a virtually unlimited on-off cycle life due to the non-contact operation of the switch. The Can-Stack linear actuator with the integrated proximity sensor is perfect for limited space applications.

A highly repeatable on/off signal is accomplished using a rare earth magnet embedded directly on the end of the internal screw. As the screw moves in and out of the actuator, the magnet moves towards and away from the sensor face causing the device to switch states. The proximity sensor is designed to operate in a digital switch mode using an open-collector output through an integrated NPN transistor switch. The proximity switch is a 3 wire device and requires a supply voltage of 3.8 VDC minimum to 24 VDC maximum with a current consumption of 10mA max.

The Haydon 25000 Series is part of the G4 line of high-output Can-Stack linear actuators and are "second to none" in performance when compared to similar sized actuators in the marketplace today. Improvements include optimized stator tooth geometry, high energy neodymium magnets, custom engineered polymers, and larger ball bearings for greater rotor support and axial loading.
/en/news/91/introducing+the+25mm+can-stack+linear+actuator 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/91/introducing+the+25mm+can-stack+linear+actuator Thu, 26 May 2011 09:23:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits at Subcon 2011
Reliance Precision will be exhibiting its latest design and manufacturing capabilities at Subcon, the UK's international subcontract manufacturing show, at the NEC, Birmingham, from 7th to 9th June.

Work will be featured across a diverse range of technologies including: precision gears and geared mechanisms, quadrupoles for mass spectrometry equipment used in scientific analysis, and specialist opto-mechanical, clean and high vacuum assemblies.

Reliance Precision Mechatronics (RPM), a division of Reliance Precision Ltd, will also feature at Subcon. RPM's product integration service offers a complementary capability, creating cost-effective sub-assemblies using standard and modified catalogue components.

Visit Reliance Precision Ltd. at Subcon, June 7-9th 2011, stand G29

Click here to get your free Subcon invitation. In this new version, the higher torque capacity is achieved by using multi-beam helixes, with the largest offering a maximum torque of up to 22Nm. These new couplings combine high torsional stiffness with low radial stiffness, thus protecting the bearings and the shafts of the connected drive parts. The couplings are manufactured in one piece, having no moving parts avoids friction loss and the design guarantees good vibration damping.

The bore of the helix section is standard, allowing shafts to be placed into the coupling without affecting function. Feather key grooves are also available. The couplings can be supplied in a range of sizes with outer diameters from 9.5mm up to 38.1mm and an overall length from 14.2mm up to 66.7mm. Bores are available from 2mm up to 22mm, with clamp or set screw type fixing hubs. Alternative bore combinations are also possible.

The couplings can be supplied in aluminum or stainless steel, allowing them to be used in various applications such as those requiring a high temperature range or the food industry. These couplings are suitable for heavy duty rotary position transducers, servo and stepper motors, mechanical and mechatronic drive assemblies and in automation applications.
/en/news/89/multi-helix+couplings%2C+a+strong+group 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/89/multi-helix+couplings%2C+a+strong+group Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:19:00 +0000 Reliance Exhibits at MEDTEC 2011

Reliance Precision Mechatronics (RPM) will be exhibiting its range of components and assemblies at MEDTEC, the UK's medical technology and manufacturing exhibition, to be held at the NEC. Products will include leadscrews, couplings, gears, and slides.

A major feature at this year's exhibition is RPM's latest product integration capability, demonstrated by RSL Steeper's bebionic prosthetic hand, the finger and thumb actuators of which are supplied by RPM.

The specialist manufacturing capabilities of RPM's parent company, Reliance Precision Limited, will also be featured, including recently expanded cleanroom facilities, dedicated to opto-mechanical assembly.

Visit Reliance Precision Mechatronics at MEDTEC, April 6-7 2011, stand 1321.

/en/news/88/reliance+exhibits+at+medtec+2011 1 http://www.rpmechatronics.co.uk/en/news/88/reliance+exhibits+at+medtec+2011 Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:19:00 +0000 Reliance Showcases bebionic Hand At MEDTEC 2011
Reliance Precision Mechatronics is proud to feature the RSL Steeper bebionic hand at this year's MEDTEC exhibition.
