Customised Linear Motion Solutions

Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Inc, a premier manufacturer of engineered linear motion products, now has the capability to customise linear motion systems for many different types of application. An example of the customisation capabilities to meet a unique engineering requirement is a precision linear rail system developed for an application requiring very high stiffness, accuracy and repeatability.

Along the axial length of the system is a precision recirculating ball rail, which has a high-load capacity and high rigidity. The extruded aluminium frame supports all the components for the system. This particular design, the drive mechanism is a Haydon^{^TM}stepper motor and a precision rolled 303 stainless steel Kerk^® leadscrew. Attached to both the leadscrew and the precision ball rail is a machined aluminium load carriage with an integral Delrin drive nut.

The rail system can be easily tailored to suit many alternative applications. The design of the rail mechanics allows a maximum load of 1570N in the 'Z' direction while maintaining accuracy specification. Maximum roll, pitch, and yaw specifications are 22.65 Nm, 13.9 Nm, and 13.9 Nm respectively. The practical load capability will depend on the motor / leadscrew combination. The system has been designed around a 9.5mm diameter lead screw using standard leads of 0.64mm to 38.10mm.

When combined with a 1.8 degree hybrid stepper motor, very fine positioning resolutions can be configured. A brush or brushless DC motor also can be used for applications requiring higher speed and higher linear force output. Positioning resolution in the case of a closed loop DC brushed or brushless motor is determined by the capabilities of the encoder system. An encoder system can be added to either the motor or the leadscrew.

For applications requiring even greater accuracy than can be accomplished with a rotary encoder, the rail system has features added to allow the integration of a linear encoder with micron resolution allowing feedback of the true load position.

Changing Lives and Inspiring Futures

The Ocean Youth Trust North (OYT North) state proudly in their motto that they: "change lives and inspire futures"; a claim that Eddy Townend and Tom Jones, second year apprentices at Reliance Precision, would certainly agree with having spent three days working with the trust on The James Cook, an impressive 21 metre ocean going vessel, anchored at the mouth of The River Tyne.

The OYT North facilitate a personal development experience which detaches young people from the security of their everyday lives, where mundane chores, once taken for granted, suddenly become their own responsibility: "On the way there, I had to find my way around unfamiliar places and changeable train timetables for the first time," explains Eddy. "When I eventually arrived, I was introduced to everyone and we were given our individual tasks to do. It was all a bit daunting at first, but the staff encouraged us and made us feel part of their team."

The work Eddy undertook on board the James Cook helped develop his awareness of different aspects of engineering. Back at Reliance he is part of a team producing high accuracy components, often working to tolerances of just a few microns. This trip gave the apprentices the opportunity to try their hand at something a little different.

Mick Hallam, Reliance's Training Officer, is convinced that exposure to more maintenance based tasks builds the apprentices' appreciation of how engineering components work within mechanisms: "One of the projects involved the dismantling, cleaning and reassembling of a water pump. This sort of activity nurtures an understanding of how parts work together and that the correct use of lubricants can be just as important as producing components with dimensional accuracy."

With its commitment to quality and engineering excellence, Reliance's in-house training school has produced a steady flow of high calibre, award-winning apprentices. Both Eddy and Tom agree that trips such as this provide a refreshing and diverse element to their training that adds balance, promotes teamwork and builds character. Additionally, Mick Hallam comments on how apprentices often demonstrate a new maturity on their return: "in the quality of the work they produce, but also in how they interact with their colleagues".

Selex Galileo Hosts Supplier Awards Ceremony

Reliance Precision received the SC21 silver award for business excellence at a ceremony in Edinburgh hosted by Selex Galileo Ltd. and organised by ADS, the trade organisation for the UK's aerospace, defence, space and security industries. ADS manage the SC21 accreditation process and the stringent assessment of suppliers working towards the bronze, silver and gold award standards. A number of awards were presented at the event and a common theme emerged from all the companies participating - that the support of employees from across the business is the most essential factor for SC21 success. Roger Kenworthy, Reliance's Managing Director, accepted the silver award on behalf of the company's 220 employees and celebrated this proud achievement with the team on his return to Huddersfield.

At the ceremony Phil Curnock, from the SC21 project office, noted that there are now 540 companies engaged in the SC21 programme, with 55 bronze awards having been presented, 19 silver and 2 gold. Reliance is already planning for gold.

Reliance Precision Receives SC21 Silver Award for Business Excellence

Reliance Precision celebrated the New Year with a second SC21 award for business excellence.

Reliance was presented with the SC21 bronze award at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2010. Since then the company's delivery and quality performance to key customers have been monitored against the demanding quality and delivery criteria set out by ADS, the trade organisation of the aerospace, defence, security and space industries. The silver award requires 99% on-time delivery and 99.5% quality performance, which Reliance delivered consistently across the period, as well as demonstrating improvements in business processes and lean manufacturing.

Reliance is one of only a small number of suppliers to the aerospace industry to have achieved the SC21 silver award. At the end of 2011 just 8 companies of 500 engaged in the programme had been granted the silver level.

Introducing the Folded-Over Motorised Linear Rail System

Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Inc., a premier manufacturer of engineered linear motion products, announces the RGLS/RGLW linear rail platform with a180^o folded-over motorised design. This design allows for a small footprint linear actuator system, perfect for precision motion applications where space is at a premium.

The folded-over linear rail contains all the components needed for a complete motion sub-assembly, including the stepper motor, belt and pulley, precision leadscrew, bearing supports, and rail with load carriage. The rail also contains the capability of mounting sensors within the integrated dovetail grooves.

The standard drive ratios available from the motor to the screw are 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2, using lightweight aluminium pulleys and a fiberglass reinforced neoprene timing belt. Screw leads available range from 1.27mm to 30.5mm/rev (0.050 in/rev to 1.2 in/rev). When using a 2:1 ratio, a 1.27mm/rev (0.050 in/rev) leadscrew and a 200 step/rev stepper motor, a positioning resolution of 0.003175mm (0.000125") is possible. For high-speed applications, a 1:2 pulley ratio and a 30.5mm/rev (1.2 in/rev) leadscrew provides a maximum speed of over 178mm/s (7 in/s).

All RGLS and RGLW linear rails feature standard wear-compensating anti-backlash driven carriages to ensure repeatable and accurate positioning. The splined aluminium guide rail and 303 stainless steel leadscrew is coated using Kerkote^® TFE coating, providing a permanently lubricated surface. Maximum load capability of the folded-over motorised RGS is 15.85Kg (35 lbs) in the "Z" direction and 15.85Kg (35 lbs) in the hanging/gantry load position. Maximum "roll" and "yaw" moment is 0.367Nm (3.25 in-lbs) and maximum "pitch" moment is 0.639Nm (5.66 in-lbs).

Reliance Precision's European sales team has been expanded with the recruitment of Arjan Bos, Sales Engineer for Northern Germany and The Benelux. Arjan will be responsible for developing Reliance's opto-mechanical manufacturing business, an area of significant growth for the company. Reliance Cool Muscle 2 - A Highly Flexible Low Cost Motion System

Reliance Precision Mechatronics now boasts the Reliance Cool Muscle 2 within its range of integrated motors. The Reliance Cool Muscle 2 (RCM2) combines a motor, encoder, driver, controller, PLC function and power Supply. The benefits of this integrated AC servo system are the reduction in size and cost of an automated instrument, whilst reducing the development stage. Each Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is complete with its own 50,000 ppr magnetic encoder and integrated controller for precise velocity, torque and position control.

The 5,000 rpm AC servo motor (which can also run as slowly as 1 revolution in 13.9 hours) produces continuous torques up to 1.09Nm (3.82Nm peak), with a maximum speed of 8,000min-1 (depending on model). The Reliance Cool Muscle 2 also comes with an external torque sensor interface, which automatically changes torque output according to sensor signals, making it an ideal solution for applications that require constant tension.

Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is available in frame sizes 56 and 60 with output power 100w, 200w or 400w, and a built in universal power supply of 100-240 VAC.

Reliance Cool Muscle 2 can stand alone due to its own programming language; specified functions can then be assigned to the six inputs and the four outputs using integrated functions. Hard stop homing and software limits mean that origin sensor and limit sensors can be eliminated. Position, speed, or torque can be controlled by an analogue signal. Reliance Cool Muscle 2 can also operate with a conventional pulse driver system.

The standard RS-232 interface uses a simple ASCII command set or free Coolworks Lite software to control position, velocity and torque. Clusters of Cool Muscle motors (up to 15 in total) can also be interconnected in a daisy chain arrangement to create a highly co-ordinated multi-axis system with no additional supervisory controller. Step and direction or CW/CCW signals up to 500 Khz are supported, and the magnetic encoder ensures zero step loss.

Reliance Cool Muscle 2 is a highly flexible, low-cost motion system. The specialist support which Reliance also offers in conjunction with its Cool Muscle systems allows for both one off production through to medium volume end-user equipment.

Reliance Develops Its Young Engineers

One year after completing his apprenticeship at Reliance Precision, Matthew Lodge returned to work this week with newfound confidence, having spent seven days working on board the Stavros Niarchos, a 197ft Tall Ship. His journey from Ipswich to Stavanger, Norway with 30 other 16-25 year olds was anything but a holiday. He worked shifts through the night, doing everything from cooking and cleaning to navigation and steering, facing not only the agony of sea-sickness and the anxiety of working alongside strangers, but also the tremendous challenge of climbing 148ft high rigging. "It was amazing" Matthew said, "something I would never have done if not for Reliance. It did wonders for my self-confidence."

Mick Hallam, Reliance's Training Manager explains: "If we make our youngsters appreciate what they can achieve then we benefit as a company. The Tall Ships is one of a number of exercises we draw upon to encourage our apprentices to step out of their comfort zone and to stretch their own abilities. It develops their contribution to the performance of the team and, importantly, helps them build confidence in their own actions."

Reliance has invested in apprentice training for over 50 years and unusually has its own in-house training school. Over 20% of current employees were apprentice trained at Reliance, including many of the senior managers. This summer the company welcomed 5 new apprentices; part of the continued development of its engineering capability and commitment to ensuring long-term business continuity.

Magnetic Encoder Technology Comes to the Can-Stack Linear Actuator

The extremely compact and fully enclosed incremental encoder utilises solid state technology and includes both analogue detection circuitry and full signal processing from a single chip. When combined with the

Can-Stack linear actuator, excellent position feedback can be obtained for use in critical applications including medical equipment, analysis devices and robotics.

The 64 line quadrature encoder system utilises a high energy neodymium magnet and provides an 8 bit digital resolution, resulting in a total of 256 output pulses per revolution. The encoder provides 90 degree phase shifted A/B output channels along with a single index pulse for every complete shaft rotation. The encoder circuitry samples angular position at 10,000 samples per second for an output update every 100 microseconds.

The 256 pulse magnetic encoder is a great replacement for optical encoders and is virtually immune to vibration, shock, dust, and contaminants. The encoder can be operated using either a 3.3V or 5V input voltage. When combined with the Haydon 25000 series linear actuator, a robust, compact linear motion package is created.

The Haydon 25000 Series is part of the G4 line of high-output Can-Stack linear actuators and are "second to none" in performance when compared to similar sized actuators. Integrated Switch Increases Versatility of the 25mm Can-Stack Linear Actuator

Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Inc., a leading manufacturer of precision linear motion products, now offers an integrated end-of-stroke proximity sensor available on the 25mm 25000 Series captive linear actuators. The proximity sensor utilises miniature hall effect technology in an IC package mounted directly on the actuator. The hall effect is an ideal technology with a virtually unlimited on-off cycle life due to the non-contact operation of the switch. The Can-Stack linear actuator with the integrated proximity sensor is perfect for limited space applications.

A highly repeatable on/off signal is accomplished using a rare earth magnet embedded directly on the end of the internal screw. As the screw moves in and out of the actuator, the magnet moves towards and away from the sensor face causing the device to switch states. The proximity sensor is designed to operate in a digital switch mode using an open-collector output through an integrated NPN transistor switch. The proximity switch is a 3 wire device and requires a supply voltage of 3.8 VDC minimum to 24 VDC maximum with a current consumption of 10mA max.

Multi-Helix Couplings, A Strong Group

Reliance Precision Mechatronics is proud to introduce an extension to its range of helix couplings.

The target was to increase the maximum torque so the couplings could be used for heavy duty measurement applications and in linear drives. In this new version, the higher torque capacity is achieved by using multi-beam helixes, with the largest offering a maximum torque of up to 22Nm. These new couplings combine high torsional stiffness with low radial stiffness, thus protecting the bearings and the shafts of the connected drive parts. The couplings are manufactured in one piece, having no moving parts avoids friction loss and the design guarantees good vibration damping.

The bore of the helix section is standard, allowing shafts to be placed into the coupling without affecting function. Feather key grooves are also available. The couplings can be supplied in a range of sizes with outer diameters from 9.5mm up to 38.1mm and an overall length from 14.2mm up to 66.7mm. Bores are available from 2mm up to 22mm, with clamp or set screw type fixing hubs. Alternative bore combinations are also possible.

The couplings can be supplied in aluminum or stainless steel, allowing them to be used in various applications such as those requiring a high temperature range or the food industry. These couplings are suitable for heavy duty rotary position transducers, servo and stepper motors, mechanical and mechatronic drive assemblies and in automation applications.

Reliance Exhibits at MEDTEC 2011

Reliance Precision Mechatronics (RPM) will be exhibiting its range of components and assemblies at MEDTEC, the UK's medical technology and manufacturing exhibition, to be held at the NEC. Products will include leadscrews, couplings, gears, and slides.

A major feature at this year's exhibition is RPM's latest product integration capability, demonstrated by RSL Steeper's bebionic prosthetic hand, the finger and thumb actuators of which are supplied by RPM.

The specialist manufacturing capabilities of RPM's parent company, Reliance Precision Limited, will also be featured, including recently expanded cleanroom facilities, dedicated to opto-mechanical assembly.

Reliance Showcases bebionic Hand At MEDTEC 2011

Reliance Precision Mechatronics is proud to feature the RSL Steeper bebionic hand at this year's MEDTEC exhibition. This represents the very latest leading-edge technology in the field of prosthetics and demonstrates Reliance's expertise and adaptability in providing customised mechatronic components and integrated assemblies.

Reliance has worked closely with RSL Steeper through the development phase, specifically in the design and manufacture of the finger and thumb actuators. The bebionic hand is fully articulating, with multiple grip patterns, so the challenge has been to achieve the optimum efficiency between speed, power and noise, for the necessary hand flexibility, as well as meeting the weight and size constraints. A thorough technical understanding of the relationship between these requirements has been fundamental to the successful result.

Reliance's design and manufacturing expertise has been called upon to industrialise RSL Steeper's design concept, with rapid manufacturing of development samples to validate the design process. The building blocks have been taken from Reliance's catalogue of mechatronic components, providing the essential gears, leadscrew and nut. These have been adapted to suit the specific requirements of this project, with design engineering to integrate the piece-parts and provide a custom assembly.

Reliance announces the opening of a new office in the Netherlands to strengthen its business in the Benelux and Europe.

Having traded in Europe for many years, Reliance established an office in the Netherlands in the mid-1990s in order to be closer to its mainland European customers. Over the past 15 years Reliance Holland has become a well-known name in the Benelux precision technology industry and has represented Reliance's business across a large part of Europe.

The external linear IDEA programmable actuator is perfect for small gantry robots, motion systems for optics and lasers, high resolution imaging, precision fluid dispensers, and other applications requiring precise linear motion.

The IDEA actuator is a compact, easy-to-use electronic drive and fully programmable control unit. This is integrated with a linear actuator resulting in a single, compact package with a variety of screw pitches allowing fine resolution linear motion and a stroke length of up to 508mm. The actuator is programmed using on-screen graphic buttons, instead of complicated command sets or other proprietary programming languages. The software allows the system designer to easily troubleshoot programs through line-by-line or multiple line program execution using the interactive debug feature. Inputs and outputs can also be simulated in software before connecting I/O hardware.
Other features include programmable current control, a single supply voltage of 12 to 48 VDC, 2.6Arms (3.68Apeak) max rated current per phase, and 8 opto-isolated general purpose I/O. RLRW04 Linear Rail System Available with a Variety of Motor Options

These precision linear rail systems consist of a stationary base and a load bearing carriage that travels along a rigid extruded aluminium rail. The RLRW04 Linear Rail System is available with several in-line motor options, including a single or double stack size 17 stepper motor, a stepper motor with an integral chopper drive, or the IDEA™ programmable linear actuator, consisting of the stepper motor, drive, and controller programmed through a graphic user interface (GUI). The RLRW04 is also available without a motor, easily allowing the designer flexibility to integrate with a variety of motor types and belt and pulley configurations.

The RLRW04 carriage design is unique; it controls slide bearing play with a patent pending self-adjusting linear bearing. Integrated Stepper Motor Linear Actuator and Chopper Drive

Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions, a premier manufacturer of linear motion products introduces the MotoDrive^TM PDE Captive Linear Actuator which is available in size 17 single or double stack. The MotoDrive comes with an integrated chopper drive forming a compact system that is ideal for precision motion control applications.

The MotoDrive is capable of an output force of 220N (50lbs) for the single stack version and 350N (78lbs) for the double stack version. The captive configuration allows for a self-contained linear actuator unit with an anti-rotation device guiding a splined output shaft. The MotoDrive is ideal for applications requiring shorter stroke lengths (up to 2.5") such as precision fluid dispensing, throttle control and valve movement.

The MotoDrive can be programmed for micro-stepping with a step resolution range of 200 full steps per revolution to 12,800 steps per revolution when micro-stepping. With a supply voltage of 12 to 42 vdc, the MotoDrive actuator functions with a run current programmable up to 2.6 Arms per phase. Optically isolated inputs of pulse, direction and enable signals are required for operation. The PULSE input is a square wave that sets the speed of the actuator. The DIRECTION input is either a high or low signal using a +5vdc for shaft extend and ground potential for shaft retract. The ENABLE input is also a +5vdc signal that activates the drive for operation.

Holds current on the drive is adjustable and can be selected as zero, 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent of run current using a jumper and associated pins located in a connector on the side of the drive. Mechatronic Tidal Simulation Assists Scientists

Scientists from London's Imperial College are using the new RT3 version of the Reliance Cool Muscle NEMA 23 integrated servo system to reproduce the sub-surface pressure changes created by lunar tides in laboratory research experiments directed at improving oil recovery.

The unique abilities of the RT3 version along with the support provided by Reliance allow the scientists to concentrate on the research without having to spend time controlling and verifying the test system.

The compact closed loop motor system has unique abilities to share I/Os, perform complex coordinated motion and use mathematical notation to perform motion. The onboard memory and logic banks along with the integrated tuners, vector drive, amplifiers, 32 bit RISC processor and 50,000 count magnetic encoder provide an intelligent motor which delivers cool running and smooth motion.

For this application, the motor moves extremely slowly and has been programmed to complete a 400mm long inverse cosine motion profile over a 12 hour 24 minute period using a 0.1" leadscrew. Using this feature the scientists are able to replicate the lunar tides found in underground oil reservoirs for their experiments.
