The spacecraft, which had been in deep space hibernation for 31 months, will now continue its primary mission to chase and rendezvous with&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US">67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko; a 2.5 mile wide comet captured by the gravity of Jupiter. Following a tense 45 minutes wait, Rosetta beamed the words &ldquo;Hello world&rdquo; to scientists at&nbsp;</span>the European Space Agency (ESA)&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US">confirming the probe&rsquo;s instruments had successfully restarted and&nbsp;</span>indicating that a major stage of the overall mission had been a resounding success.&nbsp;</p> <p>The mission is of particular interest for engineers at Reliance Precision who manufactured gears for Norwegian company KONGSBERG for use on Rosetta. The gears play a vital role in rotating the two 15 metre solar panels, enabling them to perpetually face the sun: a crucial function given that Rosetta has no internal batteries and relies entirely on solar energy for electricity. Comets are thought to be debris that predates our solar system and scientists believe studying them could help expand our knowledge of the universe.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>/en/news/141/reliance+precision+contributes+to+rosetta%27s+success 1 Wed, 08 Jan 2014 09:02:00 +0000 Business Brokers Scheme Aims to Boost Apprenticeships <p>A Kirklees apprentice is encouraging other young women to consider a career in engineering - as figures show that just 3% of those starting engineering apprenticeships in the UK over the past two years have been female.</p> <p>Megan Lunn, of Meltham, is in the third year of an apprenticeship with global engineering firm Reliance Precision Limited.</p> <p>She is working towards an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in mechanical engineering - spending one day in the classroom at Kirklees College and the rest of the week at the company's Lepton headquarters.</p> <p>Since September, 2011 - when Megan started with Reliance - some 23,510 men have started engineering apprenticeships compared to just 760 women.</p> <p>Kirklees is now aiming to increase the opportunities available for young people and businesses through apprenticeships and is one of eight apprenticeship hubs in the Leeds City Region.</p> <p>A Business Brokers scheme has been set up to provide firms across all sectors with the advice needed to identify where roles can be created and what financial support is available.</p> <p>A key sector being supported is engineering - building on the district's industrial heritage - and Megan says her teacher at Honley High School gave her the idea of an apprenticeship.</p> <p>"I was really interested in science and technology at school, but wanted to use that practically rather than continuing to just study for years," she said.</p> <p>"My teacher recommended an apprenticeship with Reliance Precision would be the best route for me and he was right. I get to learn skills in a real engineering company with experiences you could never get in the classroom."</p> <p>A government report, Tomorrow's Engineers, found the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe. Having recently celebrated 25 years since launch, they estimate that over 10,000 young people have sailed on the vessel; benefitting from the life changing effects of their residential voyages.</p> <p>Such a busy sailing calendar means that the James Cook undergoes regular periods of scheduled maintenance. This is where Tom Broom, Bradley Jessop and David Black; apprentices from Reliance Precision in Huddersfield, provided a helping hand. The apprentices took a 3 day break from their regular duties at Reliance to join staff and other volunteers aboard the vessel. Docked at the mouth of the River Tyne, they helped perform essential maintenance tasks such as the de-rusting of metal parts on the deck and re-painting.</p> <p>As well as picking up some valuable practical skills, the apprentices had to use their own initiative. For Tom, it was the first time he had travelled a considerable distance alone and had to organise his own travel arrangements. The scheme highlighted the need for working cooperatively as a team in an environment where everyone took responsibility for their assigned tasks. All 3 apprentices are convinced that the expedition has helped them with their own personal development and believe Reliance will also gain in the long term; Tom Broom, second year apprentice explained:</p> <p><em>"I think that I will be able to use the maintenance skills in my work at Reliance and have new found confidence to ask advice of those working within my team. This can significantly influence the oil distribution in the reservoir and it is important to understand this in detail to design efficient oil recovery schemes. The paper investigated the influence of semi-diurnal lunar tides on this transition zone.</p> <p>Stefan Iglauer and Ann Muggeridge constructed a model that would accurately mimic these sinusoidal changes in height and pressure. Three cylindrical columns, one metre high with a 100mm internal diameter were filled with sand and a varying change in air/water contact was applied for 90 days. A reservoir was connected to the columns which moved up and down in a way that simulated the M2 semidiurnal lunar tide. This was made possible by mounting the reservoir on a platform attached to a linear slide which was in turn connected to Reliance's Cool Muscle Motor.</p> <p>It was the accuracy required to model an effective experiment which led the team to consider applying the Cool Muscle. Spotted in engineering publications and on the internet, the motor was viewed as an ideal choice for the experiment due to its ability to perform complex co-ordinated movement and use mathematical notation to induce motion. A 50,000 count magnetic encoder, 32 bit RISC processor and vector drive amplifiers, provided the ultra-smooth operation and accuracy required to effectively mimic a lunar tide. It was noted that, in application, the accuracy of the stepper motor system was within the range of +/- 0.1%.</p> <p>Reliance assisted the scientists by supplying the motor as a ready programmed unit. Using CoolWorks Lite 4.1.4, the motor/stepper was configured to reproduce the characteristics of a tidal sequence by programming 50,000 steps in each given period of 12 hours and 20 minutes; this mirrored the period from high to low tide. A pressure change of 4,000 Pa was achieved to simulate comparable pressure changes expected with tides. The experiment concluded that pressure changes do in fact influence the vertical saturation profile in addition to the expected saturation gradient predicted by assuming capillary - buoyancy force equilibrium.</p> <p>Reliance's willingness to supply an integrated, pre-programmed mechanism meant that the experiment could progress without the need to validate the test system. Judith Birley, Vendor Manager at Reliance, proposed the idea as a memorial to her husband, Kevin, who passed away one year ago. A number of female staff work at Reliance, but the nature of Kevin's illness meant the day would be focussed mainly on the men. As well as Prostate cancer, a range of men's health concerns were explored; including heart disease, blood pressure and other applicable types of cancer.</p> <p>Reliance Director, Roger Kenworthy, spoke to the whole company and the occupational nurse visited various departments, offering advice and information. People were also invited to donate to the charity if they wished. Essentially, men were informed on how to identify potential problems and not delay in seeking medical advice if they have worrying symptoms.</p> <p>The day was a great success and employees wore their yellow t-shirts with pride. The environment and challenges you're thrown into are extraordinary, and you learn so much - about yourself as much as the leadership and teamwork skills. "When I eventually arrived, I was introduced to everyone and we were given our individual tasks to do. It was all a bit daunting at first, but the staff encouraged us and made us feel part of their team."</p> <p>The work Eddy undertook on board the James Cook helped develop his awareness of different aspects of engineering. In this new version, the higher torque capacity is achieved by using multi-beam helixes, with the largest offering a maximum torque of up to 22Nm. These new couplings combine high torsional stiffness with low radial stiffness, thus protecting the bearings and the shafts of the connected drive parts. The couplings are manufactured in one piece, having no moving parts avoids friction loss and the design guarantees good vibration damping.</p> <p>The bore of the helix section is standard, allowing shafts to be placed into the coupling without affecting function. Feather key grooves are also available. The couplings can be supplied in a range of sizes with outer diameters from 9.5mm up to 38.1mm and an overall length from 14.2mm up to 66.7mm. The captive configuration allows for a self-contained linear actuator unit with an anti-rotation device guiding a splined output shaft. The MotoDrive is ideal for applications requiring shorter stroke lengths (up to 2.5") such as precision fluid dispensing, throttle control and valve movement.</p> <p>The MotoDrive can be programmed for micro-stepping with a step resolution range of 200 full steps per revolution to 12,800 steps per revolution when micro-stepping.
